N° 04 · Director's Info

Propose a show.Submissions open each October.

Show proposals for the season beginning the following September open each fall. The typical submission window is two weeks.

N° 01 · Submit

Submit your
shows in
October.

When the submission window opens, the form will be available to access on this page. Questions? Email Playreading@TheLittleTheatreOnline.org

Individuals interested in submitting to direct must be a member of the Little Theatre, and must be approved by the Board of Trustees. All prospective directors, including those who have previously directed at Little Theatre, must complete the "Application to Direct" before being considered for the season if they have not completed the application since its adoption in 2021.

The "Application to Direct" will be used by the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to review the qualifications of new directors. This review will determine whether or not the individual is approved to direct at Little Theatre.

N° 02 · Selection

Every submitted
script is
read.

The Playreading Committee reads every submitted script, then meets with each submitting director to discuss the vision for the production. Throughout, the Committee is seeking a balanced season which speaks to the mission of Little Theatre.

What we weigh. Whether the show can be cast with local talent, taking into consideration the size of cast, the time of year, and the number of men required. The set requirements and the limitations of the available space. Whether the rights are available, and whether the season as a whole is balanced and speaks to the mission of Little Theatre.

During the interview, the Committee will ask about your anticipated production team and your artistic and practical vision: what compelled you to choose the script, how you plan to address specialized set or casting requirements, how the script is relevant in current times, and how it will further the mission of Little Theatre.

What it looks
like to direct
here.

If selected to the season, Directors receive a $1,000 stipend at the conclusion of their production. Directors have the final oversight, and are held accountable, for every aspect of their productions.

Creative team. Directors have the right to select the members of their production teams. We require each production to have an Assistant Director and a Stage Manager. The Executive Director is available to assist with finding and recommending staff. First Time Little Theatre Directors may be required to work with a recommended Assistant Director for their first production.

Rehearsal calendar. Rehearsal schedules are set by each production. Recent shows have typically rehearsed Sunday through Thursday evenings, with actors called only when needed, and most directors accommodate auditions for the show which follows, generally on the Sunday and Monday after the prior show opens.

Budget. Directors are responsible for submitting their proposed budget to the Board. Sample budgets are available from the Treasurer.
